Rio 2016 is amazing. Those were the words of Ghana’s first male swimmer at the Olympic Games, Abeiku Gyekye Jackson.
The 16-year-old took to lane 8 in the men’s 50m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games on Thursday and beat his personal best record time going from the previous 24.72 to clock 24.37.
The young Ghanaian swimmer was sixth in his heat group of eight swimmers as he could not qualify.
Abeiku Jackson however takes some positives from his experience at the Rio Olympics saying in his interview after his race:
“Going in was quite tough. You get a little bit scared in the court room. There’s a lot of pressure but I went through it and it went well.
On his new record, the 16-year-old who is Ghana’s first male swimmer at the Olympics said:
“It feels great. I think I could have done better but I lost my way out. “
Abeiku also spotted a few challenges in his race in Brazil for Team Ghana highlighting the turbulence due to his lane.
“I think being in lane 8, there’s a lot of turbulence. Everyone’s turbulence in moving in your direction but “I think I did my best,” the 16-year-old swimmer said.
Ghana have 16 athletes representing at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil. Kaya Forson, Szandra Szogedi, Abeidu Gyekye Jackson and Abdul Wahid Omar have been eliminated with 12 more athletes to go.
