2016 Olympic Games: Alex Amankwah finishes 7th in 800m heats

Alex Amankwa is the fifth Ghanaian athlete to go out in the ongoing Olympic Games.

Ghana’s Alex Amankwah could not progress to the latter stages of the men’s 800m event after he finished 7th in the heats.

Amankwah, whose heat was the 6th, started the race well and was fourth at a point in the race but he could not put together a good finish.

He fell behind and eventually finished last after Abdelati El Guesse of Morocco got injured at a point.

The heat was won by Canada’s Brando McBride in a time of 1:45.99.

Alex Amankwah is the fifth Ghanaian athlete to go out of the Rio Olympic Games after swimmers Kaya Forson and Abeiku Jackson, judoka Szandra Szogedi and boxer Abdul Omar all failed to progress in their respective competitions.
Ghana presented 16 athletes for the Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

Amankwah ranked 47th overall in the event.
