The Gombe State Police Command has recovered and returned the stolen Mace of the State House of Assembly, which was snatched and taken away from the house on Thursday, May 24, 2014.
Addressing the leadership of the Gombe State House of Assembly before handing over the recovered mace to the Speaker Alhaji Nasiru Abubakar Nono, the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Shina Tairu Olukolu, said security measures put in place by the police prevented those who stole the mace from taking it to other places outside Gombe.
He said the pressure applied by the Command led those who stole the mace to abandon it by the National Industrial Court in Gombe, which was subsequently found on Friday Morning, May 25, 2018.
Responding, the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Alhaji Nono, thanked the police for their quick response to recover the mace, while calling for the prosecution of the culprits.
It will be recalled that the impeachment crisis of the All Progressives Congress Leadership at the Gombe State House of Assembly was triggered when the 8 members could not agree to impeach the leadership in the house, one of which is the Minority Leader, Ahmed Usman Haruna.
He said a faction of the All Progressives Congress felt aggrieved with Haruna for holding a press conference on May 5, after the Ward Congress of the party, in which he expressed his views on the process of the congress, hence the call for his removal as Minority Leader.
However, the chaos that erupted during the session led to the snatching of the mace.
After some time, the House reconvened and suspended the erring members and the case reported to the security agencies, as well as referred to the Ethics and Privileges Committee.
For now, the mace has been found and returned, while the house awaits the report of the Ethics and Privileges Committee for further action.
