Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games silver medallist, Rasaq Tanimowo, on Sunday won gold at the 2017 (AAU) Weightlifting Championship in Las Vegas.

US-based Tanimowo, who represented the West Coast weightlifting team, lifted 130kg in the clean and jerk and added 100kg in the snatch to retain the title he won last year. Tanimowo competes in the -56kg category.

The former junior Commonwealth champion said that he was excited to have retained his title.

He said he was unhappy that Nigeria did not take part in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Australia, which served as qualifiers for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Tanimowo said, “It was not easy leaving Nigeria for the US but I am glad that I was able to make that decision after 2015 All Africa Games.”
