Nigeria’s Ndidi Nwosu added to Nigeria’s medal haul at the Paralympics on-going in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when she won gold in the women’s -73kg powerlifting event.
Nwosu, who weighs 71.10kg, claimed the gold with a lift of 140 kg, while French lifter Souhad Ghazouani won silver, with a lift of 140.
Egypt’s Amany Ali made do with the bronze medal, after lifting 127 kg.
With Nwosu’s latest feat, Team Nigeria now has five gold medals and is ninth on the overall medals’ log.
Nwosu now joins Roland Ezuruike (men’s -54kg), Paul Kehinde (men’s -65kg) and Lucy Ejike (women’s -61kg) as gold medalists for Team Nigeria in the powerlifting event.
Nigeria made her Paralympic Games début at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona, Spain, where her all-male team of six athletes – who competed in track and field, power-lifting and table tennis – won three gold medals, thanks to Adeoye Ajibola (two gold) in sprint and Monday Emoghawve (power-lifting).
