A suspected kidnap syndicate was Saturday nabbed by the police in Enugu State for allegedly abducting a woman in the Ezeagu area of the state.

The kidnappers were said to have demanded a ransom of 20 million naira from the family of the woman believed to be in her late 80’s.

However, after much dialogue with the family, they were said to have negotiated and agreed to pay 5million naira which was reportedly paid by the family.

Trouble, however, started when the family kept waiting on the kidnappers to inform them on where to pick up the victim.

After much wait, the kidnappers didn’t respond so the family members were said to have reported the matter at the station during which one of the suspects, Levinus Ude was arrested. In his confession, Ude, who claimed to be an indigene of Omesi-Umumba ndi agu Ezeagu, in the state said the woman died of cold and they buried her in the bush in a 6ft grave and as such, could not contact the family.

Ude reportedly revealed one Obiora Chiji from Umuene in Umena ndi Agu as a member of his gang. Confirming the arrest, the state police spokesperson Ebere Amaraizu told newsmen the woman’s body has been recovered for a befitting burial.
He added that the suspect and one other yet to be named, was nabbed by the Anti- Kidnapping Squad of the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, DCII and that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other members of the gang.
