Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mustapha Maihaja says the flood affecting some parts of the country has so far claimed one hundred and one lives.
He made the disclosure at the Presidential Villa, while speaking to State House Correspondents, after he briefed the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday.
The Director General said so far, Kogi, Niger, Delta and Anambra states are the worst hit by the natural disaster.
“So far, the casualty figures as at two days ago 101 people lost their lives and 300, 000 people have been displaced, with Kogi having the highest figure of 57, 000.” He said.
The NEMA Director General also said Kebbi, Kwara, Bayelsa, Rivers, Benue, Adamawa and Taraba states are on the danger list of being affected by the flood.
Maihaja said NEMA is doing its best within the confines of its mandate, to mitigate the effects of flood affecting some parts of Nigeria.
“What we are doing as provided by the Act that established the agency, is to ensure that lives are saved and the destruction of properties is also saved as much as we can.
“So what we are doing now is to prepare, respond and mitigate effectively and possibly recovery after the whole incidence has seized. For now, national disaster has been declared in four states and eight others are being watched because of the alarming rate in the major rivers, Benue and Niger, which are rising.
As at today, the level at both rivers is reading 11. 19, which is more than that of 2012 correspondingly,” he said.
