2016 Olympic Games: Kenya’s Secretary for Sports took bodyguard to Rio, left 3 athletes with no tickets

Kenyans on Twitter lashed out at Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario’s move to reportedly include his personal bodyguard in his entourage to the Rio Olympics despite athletes missing air tickets.

The third batch of athletes left the country on Sunday, but after drama at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when it emerged that three athletes did not have air tickets.

Javelin world champion Julius Yego was among those who did not have an air ticket. The rest of the team members boycotted boarding the Kenya Airways flight to Luanda, Angola, where they were to get a connecting flight to Rio de Janeiro.

Quick consultations between the National Olympics Committee of Kenya officials and the Kenya Airways management saw Mr Yego and the two other athletes handed boarding passes for the flight to Luanda.

Mr Yego, who enjoys a massive following on Twitter, shared the news with his fans prompting and an outrage.
