2016 Olympic Games: Nigeria’s Quadri reaches round three in table tennis

Nigeria’s remaining representative in the table tennis singles events of the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympics, Aruna Quadri, has progressed to the Round three of the men’s singles.

Quadri, who got a bye from the preliminary rounds, defeated Slovakia’s Wang Yang 4-1 in the Round two on Sunday to enliven Nigeria’s hopes of getting a medal in the singles event.

It was his first match of the Games after he got a bye into the round due to his ranking in the world. Quadri is ranked 40 in the world.

The 28-year-old needed 33 minutes to defeat his opponent as he took the first set 11-7 before losing the second set 11-7.

He however won the fourth and fifth sets 11-9, 11-6 respectively. Quadri will now play Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan on Monday. The 35-year-old is ranked 7th in the world.
