President Jacob Zuma has wished Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu a happy birthday and thanked him for his contribution to the country’s freedom struggle.

President Jacob Zuma has conveyed his good wishes to the country’s Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu as he turns 85 today.

“Archbishop Emeritus Tutu has contributed immensely to the freedom and democratic dispensation we achieved as a country. He continues to inspire the nation and the world in the promotion of human rights, justice and the wellbeing of all especially the poor. We wish him a joyful birthday, good health and comfort and urge the nation to keep him and his family in their thoughts and prayers,” said President Zuma.

The religious leader and struggle icon was released from hospital last month. Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu van Furth says her father is recovering well, and gaining strength each day. The Archbishop has been recovering from a minor surgery for a recurring infection.

The 6th annual Desmond Tutu International Peace Lecture will be held at the Artscape today to celebrate the struggle icon, and the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation will be handing out cupcakes in Cape Town to people walking in the company gardens and St. George’s mall as part of their #ShareTheJoy campaign.
